COCKTAIL KUMITE Round 1, Brown Derby Vs Tequila Gimlet!

Pouring! Mixing! Cocktailing!
KUMATE-ING!
By Johnny Lager

On the 01/27/14 Dig Radio live broadcast of the Dr. Radio Show, we started the Cocktail Kumate! [Bracket sheet here]

Brown Derby/Boston Daiquiri
2 oz Dark Rum
1/2 oz Lemon (Fielded with Lime)
2 tsp Maple syrup
1 dash Angostura Bitters (if using lemon)

Shake, serve up in a cocktail glass.

VS

Tequila Gimlet

2 oz Blanco Tequila,
1 oz Lime juice,
1 oz Simple Syrup

Shake, serve on the rocks in a Lowball glass.

WHICH COCKTAIL WILL WIN THIS ROUND OF THE KUMITE?!

Four out of Five Drunk, Fake Dr's Recommend: TEQUILA GIMLET!

Ringside Analysis:

The Brown Derby/Boston Daiquiri
A very citrus forward drink. Even though the maple syrup makes a nice showing and brings a gentle sweetness that compliments the dark rum's caramel vanilla notes, the lime was a bit too aggressive. In the end, I recommend using lemon juice instead of lime, and the smallest dash of bitters.

The Tequila Gimlet
Surprisingly well balanced, very interesting and refreshing. In a way, you could think of it as a breezy, clean Margarita, using simple syrup to sweeten, instead of the familiar Cointreau. Both drinks fielded were citrusy but the balance of the Tequila Gimlet was nearly perfect.

Bottoms up, keep it Kumite?
