COCKTAIL KUMITE Round 4, Ernst Vs Negroni!

Count Camillo Negroni.
I like to think we'd have been chums.

On the 02/17/14 Dig Radio live broadcast of the Dr. Radio Show, we went to round 4 of the Cocktail Kumite! [Bracket sheet here]

Ernst
2 oz Gin
1 oz Lemon Juice
1 oz Luxardo Liqueur
1-3 oz Saison Beer

Serve on ice, in a Collins glass. Garnish with a twist of lemon and/or cherry if desired.

VS

Negroni
1 1/2 oz Gin
3/4 oz Campari
3/4 oz Sweet (Italian) Vermouth

Garnish with an Orange Peal

Stir over ice, strain into a cocktail glass, garnish by breaking the orange peel over the drink, then dropping it in.

WHICH COCKTAIL WILL WIN THIS ROUND OF KUMITE?!

Three out of Four Drunk, Fake Dr's Recommend: NEGRONI!

Barside Analysis:

Ernst:
This variation of the Aviation Cocktail, itself a variation on a Gin Sour, has a wonderfully complex flavor, hitting many notes; citric, sweet, sour and Saison, which is somewhat of a wild-card. Saison beers can have a wide range of flavors, so pick yours wisely. If there is one thing we have learned abut the Dr's majority pallet, it is that they do not like citrus. Enjoy your scurvy, gents. Still, this cocktail might benefit from dialing back the lemon juice, which will allow the Luxardo and Gin to come through a bit more. Either way, I think you'll find this is a fantastic summer cocktail.

Negroni:
A classic, slightly bitter cocktail invented in Italy by the hard-drinking Count Camillo Negroni, when he spiked his Americano Cocktail with gin (My homeboy!). If there is a second thing we know about the Dr's majority pallet, it is that they like sweetness to a suspect level, but the Negroni managed to squeak into the next bracket anyway. Truthfully, Campari's bitterness tends to keep the Negroni in the hands of practiced drinkers, especially at the original 1:1:1 ratio. Try the recipe as it is listed here, and adjust to your taste. If you like, you can substitute the less bitter Aperol for the Campari.

Next week's Bracket, The Sloppy Possum Vs The Toronto
Bottoms up, keep it Kumite!

  1. Woah! I'm really enjoying the template/theme of this website. It's simple, yet effective. A lot of times it's very hard to get that "perfect balance" between usability and visual appeal. I must say that you've done a amazing job with this. In addition, the blog loads extremely fast for me on Safari. Superb Blog! facebook log in
